How to Name the Learning in Play

Three Steps You Can Implement Now

Early in my teaching days, when I was in a four-year-old classroom, a mother came to me very upset.

She said she asked her son every day, "What did you learn today?"

And every day, he replied:

"Nothing. We played."

This mother was visibly upset. "Is all they do play? Is this how you are preparing my son for kindergarten?"

In that moment, I had no words. I knew her son was learning so much in my classroom. But I could not find the words.

I swore that day I would find a way to open parents' eyes so they could see what I see.

In this free one-hour webinar, I will walk you through the three steps I use to name the learning in play so anyone can see it.

What You Will Learn

  • The three-step process I use to name the learning in any play moment, from the block center to the mud kitchen
  • The single shift that moves a conversation from "they just played" to "look what they are ready for"
  • Why the learning gets lost between what you see and what you say, and how to close that gap
  • How to speak about play so families, directors, and colleagues see what you see
