A Place I Dreamed About
Some places seem to find their way into your heart long before they ever become yours.
Years ago, I visited what was then a Waldorf-inspired forest school called Roots of Wonder. The very first time I stepped inside, I felt something I can only describe as magic. The cottage was peaceful, beautiful, and deeply connected to the surrounding forest.
Time passed, the forest school eventually closed. Then, in 2024, an unexpected opportunity appeared. Today, we call it the Hummingbird Cottage.

The Magic Within the Walls
One of the first things people notice when they enter Hummingbird Cottage is the feeling of warmth. Part of that comes from the walls themselves.
Two of the cottage walls are painted using a traditional Waldorf technique called Lazure. Rather than covering the walls with a single flat color, many transparent layers of paint are gently brushed on, creating soft movement, depth, and light. It is difficult to explain until you experience it, but the walls almost seem to glow. They create a sense of calm, beauty, and wonder that is hard to put into words.
The Lazure painting has remained from the days when this was Roots of Wonder, and I have always felt it gives the cottage much of its quiet magic.
The magic Forest
Where Light Meets the Forest
My favorite feature of Hummingbird Cottage is the wall of large glass doors that open directly onto what we lovingly call the Magic Forest.
Throughout the day, sunlight pours through the glass, filling the cottage with warmth and changing with the seasons and the time of day. The boundary between indoors and outdoors almost disappears. Children can watch the wind move through the trees, notice birds visiting the garden, or step outside to continue their adventures in nature.
The cottage doesn't simply sit beside the forest—it feels like it belongs to it. Together, they create an environment that invites curiosity, peace, imagination, and deep engagement. Every time I ope the door, I still feel the same sense of wonder I experienced on my very first visit.
